What is Musculoskeletal Pain?

Musculoskeletal Pain is pain or discomfort in one or more of the body muscles. It is a common problem mainly associated with excessive exercise or manual labor which may lead to muscle injury.

Generalized muscle pain may also be a sign of a systemic disease, such as an infection (eg. influenza, rheumatic fever, etc.). In this case, it may be accompanied by other symptoms such as joint pain (arthralgia), fever or general weakness.

The most common causes of muscle pain are:

1. Excessive body muscle use without adequate rest breaks
2. Muscle ligament injury
3. Stress which often causes various symptoms such as muscle tension,among others.

How to distinguish between muscle pain and an injury

It is often quite difficult to distinguish between muscle pain and muscle injury. Symptoms of a serious injury include acute or continuous muscle pain, muscle spasm or swelling, pain located in a bone or joint, stiffness or reduced joint mobility, hematoma or numbness.

Types of muscle pain

1. Acute Muscle Pain
Occurs during exercise or immediately after. Pain intensity is high due to accumulation of waste products of the metabolism in muscles (eg. lactic acid) causing inflammation to the pain receptors of this area.

2. Delayed Onset Muscle Pain (Muscle Soreness)
Occurs 24 to 48 hours after training and is characterized by a decrease in strength and muscle performance and reduction in joint mobility (less flexible). The intensity of pain depends on
a) the intensity and duration of exercise,
b) the fitness level of each individual,
c) the type of muscle contraction.

In the past,Muscle Strain was attributed to lactic acid remaining in the muscles for a long period of time after intense training or after physical activity. Today however, scientists believe that this syndrome is due to small tears in muscle fibers caused during an intense programme and occurs mainly after resistance training.
These small injuries result in the accumulation of fluid around the muscle fibers and swelling.

3. Muscle strain
The most common injury suffered by people associated with sports activities is muscle strain. Strain is the rupture of the muscle fibres due to intense contraction, excessive dilation or an outside source (eg. a kick). Sporting activity should be discontinued immediately if any kind of discomfort or muscle pain is felt in order to avoid further injury to the muscle fibres.

Muscle strain may be caused by:

a) Decreased muscle elasticity caused by inadequate stretching exercises beforehand

b) Excessive muscle fatigue after prolonged exercise

c) Poor diet and lack of potassium, sodium or magnesium in the body

d) Muscle atrophy due to past injury
